There is something comforting about seeing and hearing the rain outside while you are snuggled up, dry and warm inside. Likewise, it is truly awful to realize that all that water isn’t staying outside because some of it has gotten inside your Jessup home. Your roof is leaking! Take a deep breath. Finding and repairing roof damage in your Jessup home doesn’t have to be a nightmare. You’ll need to figure out where the leak is coming from, so here are some tips to help you do that.
Work Backwards
You can probably see where the issue is inside pretty easily – the water dripping down, the mold or mildew – but that doesn’t always line up precisely with where the leak in the roof is. Often the water will enter through the leak but then travel down the rafters or insulation sheeting before finally finding a place to drip through the ceiling. Trace the water discoloration and staining back up to the hole, if possible.
Light up the Roof
Choose a bright and sunny day to head up into the attic. When you’re up there, be very careful to step on the framing timbers, not the drywall or insulation, as that won’t hold your weight. Keep a powerful flashlight you too. Hopefully, you’ll be able to backtrace the staining to the source, but if not, you may be able to see the sunlight from outside or to catch the spot in the beam of your strong flashlight.
Simulate Rain
For this, you’ll need an adventurous friend and a dry day in your Jessup neighborhood. While one of you is in the attic (with your powerful flashlight of course), the other takes the garden hose onto the roof and wets everything down. Don’t wet the roof willy-nilly – take a systematic approach, soaking it one section at a time so that the spotter inside can mark leaks as they show up.
Know Your Limits
Some things you can do for yourself, but some things you can’t. Be honest with yourself about which is which, especially with roofing issues. If your roof is steep or old and in need of extensive repairs, you’d be better calling in an expert. Likewise, if your Jessup home is more than two stories high, you should not be getting up on the roof yourself. Finally, if you don’t have the tools or knowledge to fix the problem, you may as well call in the experts and let them handle the whole process.
