In the spirit of the holiday season, it may be easy to get carried away with the festivities and forget about the most vital thing: safety. Unfortunately, fire is a threat, and one must be cautious to avoid a catastrophe. While Christmas tree fires are rare, they do have a higher death rate than other house fires. Follow these fire safety tips to help you prevent Christmas tree fires.
Purchase a Fresh Tree & Water It
A well-hydrated Christmas tree is less prone to catch fire than an old one. Purchase a fresh, green tree that hasn’t been standing around for too long. If the fir needles bend or pine needles break, it’s not ideal to buy it. Shake the tree to confirm whether a lot of needles fall off or not. If few fall off, your holiday tree will last longer.
Another way to prevent Christmas tree fires is to water your tree at least once daily. Ensure it has a significant water basin and avoid letting its stump dry. The tree will last 4-6 weeks beyond the Christmas season on this schedule.
Take Down the Christmas Tree After the Season
Remember to take down the Christmas tree once the holiday is over. Leaving it around may lead to forgetting to water it and leaving primary fuel for fire sitting in your home. Take it down promptly once the season is over because most Christmas tree fires happen in January due to neglect.
Select Quality Lights
Even though pines and firs don’t cause fires, electrical wiring can. A possible fire can break out if your wiring is outdated and frayed. Also, your electrical panel matters because some models are more hazardous than others since they fail to trip the circuit during overloading. So, prevent Christmas tree fires by choosing high-quality lights designed for the purpose.
Supervise
Prevent Christmas tree fires by keeping heat sources away from the tree. This includes space heaters and candles; do not place them above or under heat vents. Moreover, keep your tree lit while you are in the room but off when you spend a lot of time away from it. An unsupervised lit Christmas tree is never ideal.
